Random Events

It's been a while, world. Some things that are happening recently:

Facebook: It's sad to say that I have become a type of addict; I have to get my fix every day. Not as much as others, but quite addicted, I frequent the site and waste my time. Although, I do have to concede... Facebook is not entirely evil. The ability to keep in touch with others around the world is quite amazing.

Key Club: Join now! It's a great opportunity. Now that my short advertising is over, I'd like to say that I've been slacking a bit (shame on me, I know). I am the District Communications Coordinator, and I definitely feel like it. With all the other things going on in my life, I'll admit: it's a bit hard to manage. But nonetheless, time continues without pity, and I am helpless. However, the experience is extremely rewarding; I would never want to not be in the position I am. This is just my direction-less complaining.

Drum Major: Last year, I was one of the assistant drum majors for our high school marching band. Typically, it's two seniors and one junior. Although I was a drum major, I still have to audition again if I want to be one this year.
Last week were "training classes" for those who were interested in being one of three drum majors we have. Normally there are a lot who try out (last year it was around 16!) but this year there were only 5 interested. It was the same thing I had to go through last year. Basics were covered and everyone was taught a little bit of the life of a drum major. This week typically counts as the preliminary cuts, but since there were so few trying out, everyone automatically went on to the final round.
The final round was today! The people interested had to try out in front of the director and band. The audition consisted of: Drop the Needle, giving commands, conducting Star-Spangled Banner, doing a salute, and doing a [self-made] routine. Having a year of experience already under my belt, I have an advantage over the others who are new since I came prepared to the audition. Although I was prepared, I felt nervous. Last year I wasn't nervous because I didn't care as much, but this year was different. It went fairly well, but I did mess up. However, nobody noticed (thank goodness)!
I think we're supposed to find out the results tomorrow, but a friend of mine saw the list already posted after school (I leave school early). I'm head drum major! I can finally relax a little bit.

End of school/Finals: The end of school is soon, and it feels surreal. My finals will be on Friday and Monday. Recently, I've been slacking off by not paying attention and procrastinating. The nearing of summer really messes with my mentality. Exhausted and excited, I felt like I should mention something about this.

The end of the world

Yesterday, I went out to lunch/dinner with my step-grandfather. During our meal, we were conversing, and he brought up the subject of 2012... and the possible impending doom.
It started like this...
Him: "You know, I'm starting to think that in 2012..."
Me: "The world's going to end!" (sarcastically)
Him: "Yea..."
Me: ".....uh..huh?"
I was completely joking, and when he said it so seriously it caught me off guard. I didn't believe for a moment the tale of how the world was going to end in 2012, but my grandfather thinks otherwise. We started talking more about this since I wanted to understand what he meant. Apparently, he has some belief in what the Mayan calendar says about a "great event that only occurs once in 13,000 years". He said that it may be the return of Christ, but I refuted that with a statement that "if it truly is an event that occurs only once in 13,000 years, then Christ coming would be too early", and he agreed. Eventually, I sort of (I think) convinced him that there may be just some solar system being created somewhere or something astronomical along those lines.
The conversation was a bit of a mind-opener. Being young and skeptical, surrounded by those like me, there's no discussion in the matter that the world will end in 2012; it won't. However, there really are people out there that have interest in it and may believe it. Stating that, what makes this prediction so valid? Sure, some people may have predicted some things that came true, but does that mean that something as disastrous as the world ending will come true? The possibility of error is great; this creates my skepticism. I think that the statement as great as the world coming to an end as we know it created the massive uproar. There have been many other predictions, yet not many have created a stir in the masses due to the low level of interest; the world ending definitely attracts attention, so many have focused their attention to it.
Although I believe the world will not end, there could be a possible event that would change the world as we know it. For example, there could be some type of natural disaster or even a formation of another solar system in the galaxy. However, in the end, I cannot bring myself to accept the prediction of the world ending.

Christmas Eve

I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays!! Although the idea of gifts is exciting, remember the true spirit of the holidays. Have a great December 25, 2010!!
